Off to Monhegan!

The last week has brought a few disappointments and many joys. That Macworld conference I mentioned? Turned out to be a dud for me, and for the rest of the Mac community. So, with a lack of new PowerBooks until at least September, I decided to turn that frown upside down, and with a few parental authorizations, I ordered a brand-spanking new TiBook 400 Mhz, with a boatload of useful extras. I should now be more than set for the nearly-laptop-required classes at HLS that begin in only one short month. The accessories have already started to arrive, and by the time I return from Monhegan, the TiBook should be on its way. Check out the specs of this beautiful machine here.

This past weekend, Sarah and I tried to beat the heat, by heading to York Wild Kingdom, in York, ME. We had a marvelous time looking at the monkeys, exotic birds, lions, tigers, and bears. Though a bit run down, the animals seemed to be doing well. You'll be able to see some zoo shots on the photo page at the end of the month. We stopped at Bob's Clam Hut in Kittery on the way back. Mmmmm!

After a golf round with Joe and James Fahey in Newburyport (in golf, the winner gets the highest score, right?) at 28 over par for nine holes on Sunday, the weekend ended with a rousing game of Trivial Pursuit. And now, a relaxedly vacationistic packing for Monhegan proceeds at a snail's pace. Foley seems a distant memory right now, even as my remaining two weeks there lurk at the edges of my brain!

As temperatures climb here in Hingham, it looks like I'm getting out of town at the right time!

Friday, Friday, Friday! And Friday the 13th at that... though Friday the 13th has always brought me luck. ;)

The Photos page is ready for prime-time. (Finally!) Look for even more digital, impromptu, artistic (I mean, pseudo-artistic) shots to be posted at each month's end. I may make some special occasion exceptions to the monthly rule, but it seems a good place to start. Should I ditch the frames around the pictures on the thumbnail pages? What do you think?

Wedding plans continue to mount; save-the-date cards will be going out before the end of the summer to all invited parties. Sarah's trying her hand at the calligraphy for this project, to see if she's willing to try the invitations on her own.

Two weeks from now, I'll be relaxing with Sarah, Jesse and Sasha on Monhegan's far and fair shores - and not a minute too soon. I have one more week at Foley until my week off, and I now understand why nine-to-five workers look so feverishly forward to weekends and vacations. Not that I'm not learning about corporate law or big firm life, but working within a five-day nine-to-five situation locks you into a pattern which we naturally yearn to leave behind for a while.

Meanwhile, I'm anxious about next week's Macworld New York conference, as I'm in the market for a PowerBook, and the current TiBook really isn't worth the price they're now charging - $1000 more than the very neat iBook, for essentially a slightly larger screen and a different processor. Bring on Mr. Jobs, and I hope he has good news for my law school laptop aspirations. Apple computers really are my one real technological obsession. If you want to follow the pre-Macworld hype, head over to the light-hearted As the Apple Turns for the lowdown.

A final question, before I begin the long countdown to five. How many women did Gary Condit ensnare during his term in Congress? An 18-year old minister's daughter, an ABC news reporter, an airline stewardess, Miss Levy? Will the rest of you please stand up? American politcal life gets more spectacularly sordid by the hour. So much for "civility" in Washington...

Did you catch the (nationally-televised) Pops concert last night? My sister was right near the cannons, when they went boom boom. I was in a comfortable chair, sipping grapefruit juice, mentally preparing for the two remaining days of work before the weekend. I was there in spirit(s?). Anyway, did you happen to hear the Arlo Guthrie impromptu extemporaneousness? I ate it up.

So, perusing over to Lester's site, I discover, much to my envy, that he has purchased a 128MB memory card for his digital camera, and now has a tripod as well, leveled by bubbles. I thought I was doing well when I purchased a 64MB card, borrowed my parents' old camcorder tripod, and got a rapid-recharge battery charger. So much for being a click above. Also, stay tuned, the photography page is careening toward a massive upgrade, and you should see a four years flash (or slowly load) before your eyes within a week or so. (Even if my pictures aren't quite as "level-headed" as Lester's... Ack, that pun was terrible.)

As for Sweet Baby James, Sarah and I had a wet time last weekend, when the biggest thunderstorms Massachusetts has seen in the last fifty years decided to begin twenty minutes before Mr. Taylor took the stage. Needless to say, we got soaked to the bone. My new leather backpack seemed terminally water-stained, but after a few days of drying out, it looks now as if it just has character - which I suppose it does if it survived that storm! And we saw James sing about seven songs, culminating in "Mexico." Then, the National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the second time that evening, and, cold, a little disappointed, but somewhat cheerful from our commiseration and Woodstock-like moments of jubilation, we headed for the car. As we headed north on 495, the sky erupted in the most lightning I have ever seen; it was as if the lightning and thunder was crashing down within feet of the car. Of course, the rain was blindingly intense, but we made it home. I guess I should croon something like the song we didn't get to hear, "I've seen fire and I've seen rain..."

Three weeks 'till Monhegan and counting!
